Switch/Release
Switch/Release (S/R) is a mechanical device designed for improving efficiency and safety while processing live birds for ornithological research.
Banders and researchers commonly measure a bird's mass by placing it head first into a narrow container and then onto a scale. However, this can sometimes result in the bird being difficult to extract from the container, requiring firm handling or even pulling on tail feathers.
S/R features an iris mechanism that allows for quick and one-handed opening of the bottom of the container with a single twist motion. Birds can be gently pushed (rather than pulled) out of the tube. Either back into the hand for further processing or simply to be released into the wild.
Switch/Release (S/R) comes as a set containing one large and one smaller sized aperture unit. There’s the all black 40mm version (for Great Tit, Chaffinch, etc.) and the black and white 25mm version (for Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, etc.).
The device is 3D printed in PA-12 nylon, and ASA. It’s built to function year-round in all weather conditions and is entirely serviceable (spare parts available through this website).
